South Dakota Students Art Competition at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum

You are invited to attend the second annual South Dakota Railroad Museum’s Student Arts Competition beginning on Saturday, July 4th.
The Museum is open 8:30AM to 4:30PM daily to the public through October 11. Please refer to www.sdsrm.org for 2020’s dates events, and specific hours of operation.
SAVE ON ADMISSION: The Museum will offer a one-half price discount ($3.50 per adult, 10 and under FREE) for those that mention the Student Art exhibit.
Through October 11th, the Museum is featuring the juried Art Exhibit featuring pieces created by over 50 South Dakota students from fifteen school districts. Many of the original art works (created on authentic railroad dispatcher’s sheets) will also be for sale. Other prints and original pieces of railroad art will also be for sale during the exhibit.
“It is a delightful getaway in the Heart of the Hills for a day or a weekend,” said Rick Mills, the Museum’s curator. “We invite everyone to experience the art and new Museum exhibits during our 10th anniversary year.”

Yes, the Museum turned “ten” on May 1st!

The South Dakota State Railroad Museum, Ltd. (SDSRM) is commemorating this “milepost” in our history with a special event - A “Soiree” to be specific.

On October 3rd, we invite you to join us for “Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Cowcatchers Soiree,” an evening of music, food, beverages, and a special meet and greet with TRAINS Magazine editor Jim Wrinn and author Cate Kratville-Wrinn - soiree tickets are $35 for individuals and $50 for couples (Attire: handkerchiefs/masks and accompanied by a railroad hat or Stetson/bonnet of your choice).

Run Crazy Horse Full & Half-Marathon

The Run Crazy Horse Half Marathon is a point to point course, beginning at the Visitor’s Center at Crazy Horse Memorial. The first 3 miles are within the Memorial Grounds on both paved and gravel roads. Participants will pass by the old schoolhouse and loop out to the bus turnaround at the base of the Crazy Horse Carving. At mile 3, the course becomes the Mickelson Trail. For the Half Marathoners, he last 10 miles are a mixture of downhill and flat terrain. Half Marathoners will finish on Main Street in Hill City in front of the Bumpin’ Buffalo bar and grill.

Miles 3-16 of the Full Marathon will be an out and back mainly on the Mickelson Trail. Outside of Crazy Horse Memorial, marathoner runners will turn South on the Mickelson trail to the turnaround in Custer. At Mile 16, it will be downhill back into Hill City to finish on Main Street.

The 5 person Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Full Marathon. The relay exchange points will be between 5-7 miles apart. Exact distances are posted on the Relay Information Page.

Bus transportation from our Host Hotel, Palmer Gulch, and Downtown Hill City is provided. Parking will be available at Crazy Horse Memorial on race day, and shuttle service will be provided from the finish back to Crazy Horse Memorial after the race. Start time for both events is 8 AM.

Stained Glass Class

Don't miss this fall's beginner stained glass class at Insideout! Learn from Black Hills glass artist Susan Scheirbeck and create TWO glass window pieces over the course of 3 Sunday afternoons. Students will choose glass pieces to cut, assemble, pin, solder, putty, polish and hang. Ages 14 and up.
Class will be held Sunday, October 4, 11 & 18 from 2pm-5pm.
Located at Insideout (150 Poplar Street, Hill City)
$150 per person + $45 for materials & equipment use.
Bring a friend and your $45 material fee is WAIVED!

The 1880 Train appreciates our military and those who live close by and support their local communities! To show our appreciation, all active military and locals (residents of South Dakota & Wyoming) ride for FREE on the 1880 Train’s last day of the 2019 regular season! To reserve seats for this day, please contact our office at 605-574-2222. Online tickets are not available for Train Appreciation Day.

Enjoy FREE admission all day to the South Dakota State Railroad Museum, next door to the Hill City Depot.

Please note: Advanced reservations are required and must be made no later than 24 hours prior to your desired departure time. Military ID or a local Driver’s License must be presented upon collecting tickets. Discount applies only to the person with valid ID and cannot be combined with another discount. Passengers must arrive 30 minutes in advance to check in with ticket agent and pick up tickets. If you are unable to attend, we appreciate you letting us know in order that someone else may enjoy the experience.

Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase in the Hill City and Keystone Depots.

Girlfriends' Weekend

The Eighth Annual Girlfriends' Weekend will begin on Friday, November 6th and continue into Sunday November 8th with sales, samples, classes, and giveaways designed to make Hill City a fun, fall destination for you and your best gals. There will be extra excitement this year. In addition to our famous fashion show, Hill City will feature a comedy show, an inspirational speaker, and a fun walk to raise awareness for issues affecting women in our area. This free family-friendly event happens every year the day after Thanksgiving!  Enjoy shopping, specials and old-world charm in Hill City as we start the month-long festivites that comprise Hill City's Olde Tyme Christmas! Take a ride on the 1880 Train to the North Pole and add some sparkle to your day by viewing the Trees & Trains exhibit at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.   On Friday, November 27th, bring your loved ones to gather at the Alpine Inn at 5pm for roasted chestnuts and cider, followed by our home-town lighted parade at 6pm.  Santa and Mrs. Claus make an appearance in the parade and afterward, they take a break from toy-making duties to hand out apples to children and hear their fondest wishes for Christmas at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.  Take a break from the hustle-and-bustle all through December and make Hill City's Olde Tyme Christmas part of your regular family tradition this year with us!

Holiday Express on the 1880 Train

Experience the magic as you take a one hour, round trip journey from Hill City to the North Pole where Santa will board the train and ride back to Hill City, taking time to visit with each child on the way. Passengers enjoy hot cocoa, a sugar cookie and a special story on the way to the North Pole. Santa will hand out a small sleigh bell to each child on the trip.

One hour, round trip; ½ hour each way. The Holiday Express travels to the North Pole (Oblivion) and back. It does not travel to Keystone.
