In celebration of National Trails Day (Saturday, June 1), the Monument is hosting a morning bird hike with Volunteer-In-Parks Jennifer Fowler. This additional activity on Sunday, June 2 is being arranged to encourage even more weekend recreation.

The early summer season is a great time of year to be outside and explore your public lands. There are numerous species of birds that live within the Monument and surrounding national forest. Do you know how to identify them ... by sight or sound? Hiking with an avid birder might open your eyes up to other wonderful experiences on the trail.

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes or boots and dress according to the weather conditions. The Roof Trail is only about one-quarter-mile long; however, it is an uneven trail ... not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Interested guests should meet at the visitor center at 8:15 a.m.

FYI - For those that wish to take a guided cave tour later in the day, feel free to secure available tickets through Black Hills Central Reservations ... www.blackhillsvacations.com.
