Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out

September 25, 2020  - September 26, 2020

UPDATE:  With the safety of our Artists, Volunteers and Public as our highest priority, the 2020 the Black Hills Plein Air Paintout will continue in a simplified structure with some cuts to the schedule, but we will still be meeting in the beautiful Black Hills in September to do what we love.

We want to thank you for your patience and graciousness as we adjust our event to the times.

Here are the changes for the 2020 event:

  • This is a two-day event. Friday September 25th & Saturday Sept. 26th 9am to 4 pm.
  •  Friday we’ll paint at Sylvan Lake and Saturday in the town of Hill City.
  • There will not be a registration fee this year, nor will BHAPAPO be taking a commission from works sold. In light of COVID-19 we want to welcome back our artists in this manner. We will be accepting free-will donations to help us cover the cost of the event. Your support will help us get back on track for a “normal” event in 2021.
  • Host Homes will not be available. Artists are responsible for securing their own lodging for the event. There are numerous motels and campgrounds in the area but you’ll need to book soon.
  • We’ll stop painting at 4pm and all work must be framed and ready to hang by 5pm.
  • Our headquarters for the event will be at InsideOut 150 Poplar Street, Hill City. This is a lovely local small business that has generously offered the use of their large outdoor space. It is here that we will gather at the end of the day 5 to 7 pm to display and discuss our work. Tourists and visitors will be able to view and purchase your work. Artists are responsible for their own sales. To minimize contact it has been decided that artists will take charge of their own sales. Because there will be no judging this year, feel free to sell your pieces off the easel, but make sure to snap a photo and share it with us via email or Facebook. We will use these photos for promotions and marketing.
  • Please be prepared for uncooperative weather. Our headquarters are outside- bring the necessary gear to protect yourself and your work.
  • There will be no Quick Draw event, auction, or awards. In doing our best to minimize contact and maximize social distancing we have chosen to simplify the event in these ways.
  • Feel free to pack your own meals or patronize our local restaurants.

We are thrilled to be able to move forward with the event and are so excited to see you all at your easels this fall.

We are so grateful to be able to host this great event. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we adjust to accommodate the changes and challenges we’ve all faced due to COVID-19. We are so excited to work with you in September. Please keep in mind that BHAPAPO 2020 is an anomaly and we plan to have our regular event in 2021. We can’t wait to get back to all the things that make this event fantastic. All the best to you, Sincerely,

-Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out committee
