Smokey Bear Moonwalk with Black Hills National Forest

Join the Black Hills National Forest and the BHPFA on Saturday, June 1st at 7 p.m. for a moonlit hike to learn about the history of Smokey Bear and the celebration of his 75th birthday.

Participants will walk approximately 1 mile (round-trip) on uneven terrain in the central Black Hills through an old wildfire burned area and a recent prescribed fire area.

South Dakota Wildland Fire Director, Jay Esperance will lead the walk, and may be accompanied by a special guest! Esperance will share the history of Smokey Bear and will weave the importance of fire prevention with an understanding of resilient landscapes.

What to bring: Flashlights, water, and bug repellent. Dress for unexpected weather and hiking uneven terrain. Long pants and sturdy footwear (hiking boots or athletic shoes) are recommended for your comfort and safety.

Driving Directions: Travel west from Rockerville on US Highway 16 intersection for approximately 2.5 miles to Silver Mountain Road. Turn north (right) on Silver Mountain Road and travel approximately .1 miles to Boulder Hill Road. Turn north (left) onto Boulder Hill Road and travel approximately 1.3 miles to the parking area. Signs will be posted at major intersections to guide visitors to the parking area once you leave Highway 16.

The program may be canceled unexpectedly for unforeseen reasons such as lightning, high fire danger forecasts, and other reasons beyond control. The program will not be canceled due to rain unless lightning is spotted.

34th Annual Spring Volksmarch – June 1-2, 2019


The bi-annual Crazy Horse Volksmarch (an organized hike) is a 10K or 6.2-mile woodlands ramble to the world’s largest mountain carving in progress in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota.

The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is the most popular organized hike in the United States (15,000 walkers in a record year). This family event is sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the American Volksmarch Association (AVA) and hosted by Crazy Horse Memorial.

Old West Shootout, 1880 Train

Experience an old west shootout aboard the 1880 Train! The shootout begins at the Hill City Station where a few bad guys board the train and hide their treasure. The train is stopped by cowboys and “held up” halfway between Keystone and Hill City. It's a good thing the sheriff is in town!

To see the shootout, you must ride the designated Hill City to Keystone departure.

“Special Seating” for the shootout is available for these departures. These seats provide the best views of the shootout and are located in the middle three passenger cars, Red Fern, Oreville, and Harney Canyon. These seats are only available to those who begin their ride in Hill City at 6:45pm.
