HILL CITY AREA HIKING TRAILS
Bear Mountain Ski Trails - 16 miles
Two high mountain ski trails afford hikers and mountain bikers an extraordinary view of the Black Hills and enormous floral diversity.
Boulder Hill - 2 miles
A short but rewarding hike to the top of a high rocky outcropping offering dramatic views of the central Black Hills.
Deerfield Lake Loop - 10 miles
A winding loop begins in a prairie and meanders through ponderosa pine forests as it circles Deerfield Lake.
Deerfield Trail - 36 miles
Suitable for both hikers and mountain bikers, this trail slices through segments of the nation's history.
Flume Trail - 14 miles
A fascinating trail through one of the historic gold-mining areas in the Black Hills. The trail follows, in part, the trace of the Rockerville flume which hauled water from Sheridan Lake to Rockerville for sluicing and hydraulic mining.
George S. Mickelson Trail - 114 miles
A 114 mile trail from Deadwood to Edgemont - running directly through Hill City.
Spring Creek Loop - 3 miles
A flat loop trail through the woods on a ridge above Spring Creek, which can be included as an addition to the Flume Trail.

NINE TRAILS TO HARNEY PEAK
The Harney Range is likely the oldest mountain range on earth, going back nearly 2 billion years. Geologists estimate that Harney Peak was originally some 14,000 ft. above sea level. It now stands at 7,200 ft., eroding away at a rate of about 1 inch every 15,000 years.
The lookout station on the summit of Harney Peak is on the National Register of Historic Places. There are nine trails to the top, the most usual approach being the 6 mile, 2000 foot vertical climb round trip from Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park on Trail #9.
Sylvan Lake is one of the most beautiful of the highpoint trail heads. Other trails approach from the Needles area, Horse Thief Lake area and Grizzly Bear Creek.

The nearly vertical monolith known as Devils Tower rises 1,267 feet above the meandering Belle Fourche River. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bear Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians. The rolling hills of this 1,347 acre park are covered with pine forests, deciduous woodlands, and prairie grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are abundant. Proclaimed September 24, 1906 as the nation's first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt.
