South Dakota State Representative District 30 representing Pennington, Custer & Fall River counties.
Pennington County is located in the western portion of South Dakota. The terrain of the county varies considerably depending on location. The western portion consists of the beautiful, majestic Black Hills. The eastern portion of the county consists of rolling prairies and the Badlands.
The first county seat was located at a mining camp called Sheridan. Sheridan and Pennington County, SD hold the distinction of hosting the first Federal Court west of the Missouri River. In 1878, the county seat moved to Rapid City. Sheridan eventually became a ghost town and in 1939 a dam was built covering the former county seat with what is now Sheridan Lake.
In 1882, the first Courthouse was erected in Rapid City where the county Administration offices remain today.
