A Vibrant Arts Scene

From the moment you arrive in Hill City, you'll feel right at home. The crisp mountain air and the sweet smell of pine draw you in. The friendly hospitality, the vibrant arts scent and the unique Main Street atmosphere will make you want to stay.

Hill City, with a population of just over 900, has one of the liveliest downtown districts in the Black Hills. Hill City is home to several well known artists, many of whom have established permanent galleries on Main Street. Nationally recognized watercolor artist Jon Crane opened his gallery in Hill City in 1995. Crane, along with the nearby Warrior's Work & Ben West Gallery, helped spark a renewed emphasis on fine art in Hill City.

Today, six distinct galleries are nestled in Hill City and display original works from local and regional artists. The ArtForms Gallery features a variety of Black Hills artisans while the Sandy Swallow Gallery focuses on Oglala Lakota prints, jewelry and clothing. Others include the Black Hills Bronze Foundry and Dakota Nature and Art.

Alongside the art galleries in downtown Hill City are quaint shops that carry everything from hand-made jewelry to fresh roasted coffee to technical rock climbing equipment. As you saunter down Main Street, you'll be greeted by friendly smiles at some of the best restaurants in the region. Whether it's mouth- watering filet mignon or a slice of homemade pie, you're sure to find something to tickle your taste buds.

Once you've explored all that downtown Hill City has to offer, there's no better way to unwind than at one of the two local wineries. Prairie Berry Winery and Stone Faces Winery both use South Dakota grown produce to create award-winning wines that have garnered national attention. Both wineries are open daily for visitors to stop, taste and enjoy.

Between the arts, dining, natural beauty and hometown hospitality of Hill City, this charming mountain town is known as the Heart of the Hills – a title that is a perfect fit in more ways than one.
